The Soul Within:
A Magazine for Black Men

Branding/Visual Identity, Visual Design, Web Development

The creator of The Soul Within is a writer who came to me with the vision of creating an online magazine geared towards Black men. She wanted to create a safe and welcoming environment for Black men to discuss various topics of interest, and create a community. I was happy to collaborate with her to design and develop the brand and website of this exciting online publication.

Moodboard & Conceptualization

We aimed to create a magazine brand targeted toward young adult Black men, while providing a safe and judgement-free space for relevant conversations. I began my research by examining current magazines geared toward men, especially those with active online publications. However, the overall style and direction of men's magazines often includes higher contrast or neutral color schemes and attempt to appeal to a wide range of ages. Ultimately we decided to go for a lighter, more playful direction.

Logo

While discussing the creation of the logo, we determined that we wanted an icon of a male silhouette along with imagery indicating a crown, or beams of light. The idea was to symbolize the power behind vulnerability. The logo is a manifestation of these ideas.

Visual Design

We aimed to create an online magazine that is separated from its competitors by its unique style and content approach. The site was designed to be simple to navigate, with light color accents, and a clean layout. The mock-ups of the user interface were referenced when I developed a custom Wordpress theme for the website.

Takeaway: Collaboration & Communication

This project allowed me to grow as a designer and a developer. Having the opportunity to design a unique black-owned digital brand from the ground up was both an exciting and enriching experience. I discovered better ways to organize my creative process and how I could use technologies to improve client communications. During this process, Figma was used heavily to create the moodboard, branding guidelines, and logo for this project. Working with this platform also allowed me to directly share concepts with my client through a URL, and receive comments for feedback directly on the document.
